Professional Liability for the Beauty Industry: Does your Salon Insurance Need a Makeover?

November 29, 2012

Some may be surprised to hear that we recommend some form of professional liability insurance to most of our clients in the beauty business. They may ask why a hairdresser or beautician needs the same level of protection as a doctor, say, or a lawyer. From an insurance standpoint, though, the professional staff in a salon have more in common with doctors than you may think.

Anymore, beauty professionals are being held to a higher standard of training, specialization and licensing. The rise of revolutionary treatments such as chemical peels, injections and electrolysis for hair removal have given birth to a diversified beauty industry far removed from the traditional barber’s shop. Some of these “medispa” treatments may be deemed medical in nature and, like the treatments of a doctor or surgeon, can carry real medical risks for your clients. This is why professional liability is important if your salon provides any novel or invasive treatments.

You should strongly consider purchasing a professional liability policy for your business, and/or require all your professional licensed staff carry their own liability insurance, if any treatment you offer:

Leaves a Permanent or Semi-Permanent Mark on the Client:

    • Tattoo
    • Permanent Makeup
    • Piercing

 Is Invasive:

    • Injections (i.e. Botox®, fillers)
    • Electrolysis

Removes or Manipulates Dermal Tissue:

   • Manicures/Pedicures
   • Peels
   • Microderrmabrasion
   • Waxing

Manipulates Sub Dermal Tissue:

   • Massage
   • Hydrotherapy

Or, Requires a License.

Purchased separate from the standard trio of necessary business owner policies – general liability, property, and worker’s compensation – professional liability insurance protects your business assets in case the beauty salon or spa is sued for something you did (or failed to do) that contributed to injury or property damage to someone else. Liability coverage extends not only to paying damages but also to the attorneys’ fees and other costs involved in defending against  a lawsuit—whether valid or not. As an added benefit, providing proof of professional liability insurance in the cutting edge beauty market reads as a sign of responsibility to clients and can protect your professional reputation.
