Happy Decoration Day!

May 23, 2012

Today we know the holiday as Memorial Day – a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May honoring those who died while serving in the U.S. Military, but Decoration Day was originally started to honor those who perished in the Civil War. For many Americans it now signals the end of school, the start of summer vacation, the Indy 500, and peak BBQ grilling season.

With grilling season in mind, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advocates safety tips that address both propane and charcoal grilling.  For example:

• Only use propane and charcoal BBQ grills outdoors

• Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches

• Keep children and pets away from the grill area

• Keep the grill clean – remove fat buildup from the grill and the grease tray below

• Never leave the grill unattended
