Federal Trade Commission Top Complaints For 2011

The Federal Trade Commission recently released its annual report on top consumer complaints received by the agency in 2011. No surprise that for the 12th year in a row, identity theft complaints topped the list. In this country alone, more than 11 million people became a victim of identity fraud. This report only reflects the consumer complaints made to the FTC.

The report breaks out complaint data on a state-by-state basis and also contains data about the 50 metropolitan areas reporting the highest per capita incidence of fraud and other complaints. In addition, the 50 metropolitan areas reporting the highest incidence of identity theft are noted.

The top ten Consumer Complaints are:

1.   Identity Theft
2.   Debt Collection Complaints
3.   Prizes, Sweepstakes, and Lotteries
4.   Shop-at-Home and Catalog Sales
5.   Banks and Lenders
6.   Internet Services
7.   Auto Related Complaints
8.   Imposter Scams
9.   Telephone and Mobile Services
10.  Advance-Fee Loans and Credit Protection/Repair
